this is how love affairs end,
the mid-afternoon sunlight too bright to see through
as my head spins and spins,
one question on repeat
that i can’t say out loud

this is how love affairs end,
numbness at the surface
something murky lurking underneath,
that i’m afraid to examine
touch
reveal
so i shove it down
and tell you that you’d better go

i can’t resist hugging you goodbye at the door,
holding you close one last time
you still smell like watermelon
but there’s a stiff politeness about you,
an invisible door closing in my face

she’s standing there by her car,
the perfect gentlewoman
as soon as you get in, she gets in too
never bothering to look at me
as she pulls out of the driveway,
you turn your head away
looking straight ahead at nothing
